Controversy: should we regulate the financial system?

Article Abstract:

The regulation of the financial system is analyzed from three different viewpoints. Kevin Dowd supports the "free banking" approach wherein the financial services sector operates in a free trade environment. Benston and Kaufman supports a limited but positive intervention wherein banks must meet regulations such as capital requirements and deposit insurance. Sheila Dow supports extensive regulations wherein the monetary system is treated a a risk-vulnerable public good. She also contends that better regulation is needed instead of deregulation.

Privatising multi-product banks

Article Abstract:

The Israeli government became the owner of almost the whole banking system of the country after a stock market crash in Oct. 1983. It is now preparing for the privatization of these banks. The two proposals examined include spinning off entire divisions against splitting the banks into smaller banks. The substitutability between banking products is an important function in the analysis.
