The initial management of lower limb amputations
Article Abstract:
Following an amputation it is very important to give the correct pain relief according to the type of pain experienced by the patient. Many patients have phantom limb pains which are helped through procedures, such as massage, ultrasound and relaxation techniques in combination with muscle relaxants and analgesia. Analgesics should also be given for acute pain. Nurses must ensure the limb is positioned correctly. The stump dressings should be observed but remain untouched for up to five days. Some patients may also need psychological support.
