Does membership in a regional preferential trade arrangement make a country more or less protectionist?
Article Abstract:
Israel, Mexico and Turkey are presently part of an effective regional trade agreement (RTA) with the US and/or the EU as well as with the Latin American countries. These countries have also liberalized their trade regimes in the most radical way in the past 10 years. This indicates that no causal relation between trade liberalisation and RTA membership exists.
