Domestic violence: the value of services as signals

Article Abstract:

A model on the behavior of battered women is developed to explain possible reasons why abused women return to their homes after receiving social services. Statistical results show that women avail said services to bluff their abusers and decrease the possibility of violence in the future. Moreover, some women use services as a way to leave their abusers permanently. Previous research by Richard Berk et al. (1986), Tauchen et al. (1991) and Farmer and Tiefenthaler (1993) are used in the model.

Voluntary export restraints, antidumping procedure, and domestic politics

Article Abstract:

Voluntary export restraints (VERs) have been used increasingly by the US and EC as negotiable trade barriers. Antidumping (AD) petitions have been related to voluntary attempts to restrict trade through duties. Politically motivated ADs have yielded VERs that conditioned local prices and output. Local and global earnings increase with an AD-generated VER, as the VER reduces trade volume by a margin greater than expected duty.
