The booming West German economy of the 1960s and 1970s is slowing in the 1980s. The Stability and Growth Act of 1967 set goals which are no longer met. Some factors include the welfare state, the industrial structure, and less flexible workers. German workers still work hard however.

Soil erosion is a serious problem in western United States agricultural lands. Some blame government subsidies. Farmers overplant in order to collect for not planting later. Subsidies should be tied to good conservation practices. A map shows highly erodible land.
