Effects of reductions in NATO military expenditures on US employment by sector/occupation/region

Article Abstract:

The effects on US employment of a possible 25% cut in NATO's overall military expenditures are examined by sector, region and occupation using the Michigan Model of World Production and Trade computational general equilibrium. The main sectors in the US which would be adversely affected include metal products, basic metals and personal and community services. Reduced spending would only slightly lower American imports and exports. All 14 NATO member countries may be able to reduce military spending because of the improving relations between the Arabs and Israel, the breakup of the USSR and the reduced military strength of Iraq. The effects of spending cuts on the 14 individual NATO countries is also discussed.

The WTO trade policy review of the United States. 1996,

Article Abstract:

The US has shown an adherence to its commitments to the World Trade Organization policies since the trade body's establishment in 1995, but has shown in some instances that it is willing to place national interest foremost in a number of trade disputes. One possible application of US national interest in its trading relations is in the formation of regional trade initiatives such as the NAFTA, the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas and the Asia Pacific Economic Conference.
