Real gross domestic product is rising in the European Union (EU) while inflation is low, though rising. Exports are likely to help European economic growth and have helped the German economy to begin a recovery in 1st half 1997. German consumption less likely to boost growth than exports due to unemployment. The French economy is also recovering with the help of exports, and domestic demand in France is weak. Italy is reducing its budget deficit as the economy recovers.

The European Union sawa a rise in economic growth to 2.6% in 1997 compared with 1.6% for 1996. Unemployment has dropped in a number of countries, and inflation fell to 1.4% in Feb 1998 compared with 1.6% for Jan 1997. German exports have helped the economy to recover, but exports are likely to play a less important role in 1998. France is seeing stronger domestic demand, and consumption is helping to boost Italian economic growth. European interest rates are forecast at 4% for the beginning of 1999.
