European collaboration in civil aerospace: success or failure?

Article Abstract:

The performance of the European civil aerospace industry with special emphasis on civil aircraft and space projects was examined. The international aerospace industry is divided into four sectors; airframes, engines, equipment and space. In Europe, aerospace firms are increasing their collaboration in development projects. The increase in development collaboration is due to substantial increases in research and development costs. Despite the increase in collaboration, costs have not declined and increases in efficiency have not been attained in cooperative aerospace projects.

Disarming the Commission: the debate over a European cartel office

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the creation of the proposed European Cartel Office (ECO) were discussed. At present, competition policy in the European Union is administered by the European Commission's Competition Directorate-General (DG IV). DG IV has power over individual states and not over private companies. Among the issues to be considered in the establishment of the ECO are the definition of liberal market economy, administrative arrangements of the ECO with the European Commission and whether the ECO is to be constitutionally or organizationally independent.
