Evaluating the Uruguay Round
Article Abstract:
Nations which participated in the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade signed a mandate on Apr. 15, 1994 ending seven years of negotiations. The Uruguay Round agreement is important to the world econony because it prevented trade protectionism and was instrumental in reviving the economies of the leading industrial nations. Among the principal agreements of the Round were on agriculture, textiles, services, intellectual property and investment. The question of whether Congress will ratify the Uruguay Round agreement was discussed.

Concluding the Uruguay Round: The Dunkel draft agreement of agriculture
Article Abstract:
The adoption of protectionist policies by various countries concerning their respective agricultural interests have brought Uruguay Round negotiations at a standstill. In order to break the impasse, GATT Director-General Arthur Dunkel has presented a draft to the negotiating parties focusing on the final Uruguay Round agreement. The Dunkel draft agreement contains proposals seeking to convert nontariffs barriers to agricultural imports, reduce agricultural export subsidies and lessen domestic support for agricultural producers.
