Going to college to avoid the draft: the unintended legacy of the Vietnam War

Article Abstract:

During the early years of the Vietnam War, college admissions rose sharply for young men. College attendance was considered a reason for draft deferment until 1969, when the draft lottery system was instituted. After 1969, the number of men attending college dropped sharply, since it was no longer a deferment.
