Grimace and Bear It

Article Abstract:

Because Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) countries continue to spend more than their earnings, the combined deficit for the thirteen nations is estimated at over $30 billion this year. Although countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have surpluses, several nations, which depend heavily on imports, are incurring heavy deficits. The international banking community is becoming more reluctant to extend credit, and cash reserves of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are low. The economic situations in Nigeria and Indonesia, which are particularly suffering, are described. The outlook for demand for OPEC oil remains pessimistic.
