In defense of academic tenure
Article Abstract:
Tenure for academic staff can be viewed in economic terms in the context of the higher education labor market. It provides protection for professors from internal politics. Tenure is sought by staff and can bring benefits to both parties in the transaction despite criticisms by outsiders. This economic perspective is an alternative to the traditional view that tenure encourages free speech.
