Article Abstract:
The UK market for domestic electric irons is mature, with 77% of households owning an iron in 1996. The 17% growth in the value of iron sales between 1992 and 1996 therefore includes a high percentage of replacement purchases, and new product development is an important feature of the market. Manufacturers are concentrating on developing superior soleplates which are smoother, more durable and easier to clean. Sales of 3.5 million steam iron sales in 1996, were worth 85.4 million pounds sterling, 94% of all iron sales. The number of irons imported was 4.1 million.
