Keeping Ahead in Biotechnology

Article Abstract:

The United States Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) fears that the United States may lose its lead in the field of biotechnology to the Japanese. The Japanese are experienced in process-engineering biotechnology and the Japanese government has cited this field as a growth industry. Federal funding of basic research in the United States is decreasing a shortage of specialized personnel and the eventual loss of money by entrepreneurial biotechnology firms will precipitate the American decline. The OTA is making recommendations to offset these trends.
