Luenberger and Malmquist productivity indices: theoretical comparisons and empirical illustration

Article Abstract:

A comparison of the Malmquist and Luenberger productivity indices shows that the Malmquist method overestimates changes in productivity, producing measures nearly double that produced by the Luenberger method. Data from Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries between 1974 and 1997 are used as illustration.
