New evidence on altruism: a study of TIAA-CREF retirees

Article Abstract:

The effect of saving for bequests on household wealth accumulation is studied using information from a 1988 survey of Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association - College Retirement Equities Fund annuitants designed to determine pension and other net worth, including lifetime earnings. About 50% of the households plan to bequeath estates and their attitudes agree with theoretical altruistic models. The amount of wealth for estate building is huge. However, altruism towards one's children is not the main reason for saving.

Perceiving and managing business risks: differences between entrepreneurs and bankers

Article Abstract:

Variations were observed between entrepreneurs and bankers when it comes to handling business risks. Entrepreneurs tend to accept risk readily and consider personal values in solving the problem. They also take greater responsibility with regards to the outcome of their actions. On the other hand, bankers tend to concentrate more on target outcomes and avoid instances where personal responsibility is at greater risk.
