Piero Sraffa 1898-1983

Article Abstract:

The late Italian economist Piero Sraffa gave several contributions to the field of economics. He commenced his career as a monetary economist but gained prominence for writing two articles on the critique of Marshallian economics which gave rise to the theory of imperfect competition. Sraffa's excellent edition of the works of David Ricardo is hailed around the world as a benchmark of scholarship, providing a link between classical economic theory and growth and distribution. His most definitive output was the highly controversial 'Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities.'
