Pieter Hennipman on Paretian welfare economics: a comment

Article Abstract:

A critique of Pieter Hennipman's comment that Paretian welfare economics is not a part of normative economics is presented. Hennipman argues that the assumptions of Paretian welfare economics were not based on value judgements. However, an analysis of consumer behavior and individualism reveals that consumer actions are based on accepted norms borne out of value judgements. Since the assumptions of Paretianwelfare economics are based on norms, it can be concluded that it is a part of normative economics.

The equatorial Grand Canyon: dedicated to the memory of Pieter Hennipman

Article Abstract:

Research on the effect of latitude on Gross Domestic Product is synthesized via a model which segregates climate into the torrid, temperate and frigid zones. The model is tested on data obtained for the year 1985 and results show that around 70% of GDP differences could be caused by latitudinal differences. This finding indicates that poorer countries are located in the torrid zone. It deviates from the popular theory about north-south income divergence.

Observations on technical change and Paretian welfare economics

Article Abstract:

A version of the Paretian welfare theory that excludes technical change as a factor is discussed. This theory is restricted to the appropriation of resources in a static world as compared to the dynamism characterizing technical change. Paretian welfare economics does not allow the assumption that technical change has an influence on welfare. Consumer preference is found to be related to creative choices and behavior of consumers.
