Plenary statement by Professor Dr Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, Personal Representative of His Majesty the King of Thailand and Head of Delegation of Thailand at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development: Rio de Janeiro, 5 June 1992

Article Abstract:

The UN Conference on Environment and Development has the priority of formulating principles to guide nations and individuals in protecting the environment and attaining sustainable growth. These principles must uphold the right of states to exploit their own resources in accord with their own laws but without inflicting environmental damage on neighbor states. The responsibility for protecting the environment and eliminating poverty should be shared by all states. A number of practical suggestions should be added concerning sustainable growth.

Thailand's internationalization and its rural sector

Article Abstract:

Thailand's rural areas have yet to enjoy the benefits of the economic growth being experienced by the country through internationalization, that is, through export, tourism and direct foreign investment growth. Although rural Thailand contributed significantly to economic development, growth forced its people to migrate to urban areas and the disparity between the income of urban and rural populations widened. Unless government attempts to industrialize rural areas succeed, the state of rural areas can only worsen.

Incentives for exports: the case of Thailand

Article Abstract:

Export growth of manufactured goods played a significant part in the rapid economic development of Thailand during the 1980s. Between 1988 and 1990, Thailand's gross development product rose at an average of 11.7%. Despite the fast growth it experienced, some government policies affected the competitiveness of Thai exports. The effects of protective measures on exports and how these were counteracted are discussed. Protection offsets are shown to be important in export competitiveness.
