Potential for fraudulent use of digital radiography
Article Abstract:
A group of dentists was able to convince three insurance companies to authorize dental treatment based on X-rays that were fraudulently altered. The dentists took the X-rays of three patients in a private practice and used a flatbed scanner to convert them into a computerized digital file. Then they used image editing software to create cavities, tooth fractures, and other abnormalities. They submitted the X-rays to the patients' insurance companies and requested expensive treatments such as root canal therapy and crowns. The claims were all approved.
