Reciprocal fairness and noncompensating wage differentials

Article Abstract:

Recent research has looked at the question of whether persistent noncompensating wage differentials can occur in competitive markets. Attention has also been given to the potential determinants of noncompensating differentials. A number of significant findings were made, including the fact that ex-post rewarding and punishment of workers' effort levels is common, even though this is expensive for companies, and the fact that workers condition their effort choices on companies' wage offers. The results of the research do not indicate that wage differentials seen in practice are the result of reciprocal fairness considerations.

Collective action as a social exchange

Article Abstract:

The effects of social rewards on a person's behavior were examined to find out whether emotionally prompted social approval received in exchange for involvement in collective actions is capable of overcoming free-rider incentives. Social approval and peer pressure were proven to play a vital role in union formation, team production, decision-making and in establishing social norms.

Fairness and retaliation: The economics of reciprocity

Article Abstract:

The tension between economic theories which view humans as exclusively self-interested, and practical observations that people act in a reciprocal manner, either positively or negatively, is explored. The influence of such behaviours on social norms within the labor market is evaluated.
