Regional migration in Britain: an analysis of gross flows using NHS Central Register data

Article Abstract:

A study on gross bilateral migration flows using data of migration flow from the National Health Service (NIH) Central Register is presented. Aggregate time-series and pooled cross-section-time-series bilateral migration equations are determined from the NIH data. The strength of the aggregate time series correlation shows that unemployment and job opportunities influence the migration flow behavior. Factors that affect the in-migration and out-migration in an area also include relative house price and relative wage.

Dynamics and asymmetric adjustment in insider-outsider models

Article Abstract:

Models based on insider-outsider distinction are analyzed for their ability to generate assymetric responses for employment during expansion and recessions in a study of the adjustment process in multiperiod insider-outsider models. Results in partial equilibrium show that resignations produce the single difference in the adjustment of employment in the business cycle while insider-outsider models in general equilibrium produce a significant pattern of dynamic employment adjustments during expansion and recessions.

EU labour markets and monetary union

Article Abstract:

Monetary union in the US has not led to serious problems of regional unemployment, and this is due to large-scale labor migration. Monetary union in Europe may create problems for labor because migration between European countries is at very low levels, and there are also low levels within countries. Wage flxibility could help Europe adjust to shocks affecting the labor market, but wages tend not to be flexible in Europe. There could, therefore, be problems in areas where the economy is depressed.
