Review article - 'Fair' Trade and Domestic Policy Harmonisation

Article Abstract:

The book of Jagdish Bhagwati and Robert Hudec entitled 'Fair Trade and Harmonization: Prerequisites for Free Trade?' contains informative analysis on the issue of free trade. The book consists of two volumes with interrelated topics on harmonisation of domestic policies. The first volume seeks to clarify issues that hound the implementation of free trade, such as the possibility of lowered government standards. The volume also disregards the idea that harmonization of domestic policies is a prerequisite requirement to an effective economic integration.

The scope and depth of GATS commitments

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the specific commitments to asses the challenges that await the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) process is presented. Several governments were found to have committed themselves to a significant part of the service activities in the sectors undergoing negotiations in the Uruguay Round. In addition, most-favored nation exemptions do not have a significant effect on such activities where specific commitments have been finalized.

How to make trade liberalization popular

Article Abstract:

Protectionism between different countries is not sensible and is unfair. The view of the European Commission in its 1994 White Paper 'Growth, Competitiveness and Employment' that low labor standards in poor countries raise unemployment in Europe is also wrong. Social policy objects must be met by development policies. Free traders must deal with the low labor standard issue and open trade policies.
