Southern African economic integration

Article Abstract:

The slow progress made by intra-regional trade in Southern Africa can be attributed to the numerous regional trade blocs formed in the continent which encourages import substitution as an optimization of the intra-regional trade. Southern African trade should move in the direction of trade liberalization by the lowering of the common external tariff, rather than in the direction of gaining preferential trade status. Trade liberalization would allow the smaller, vulnerable economies to participate in intra-regional trade without having been disadvantaged by their larger, more developed neighbors.
