A longitudinal study of the effects of pessimism, trait anxiety, and life stress on depressive symptoms in middle-aged women
Article Abstract:
A three year follow-up study of premenopausal women, aged 42-50 years, shows positive correlation of depressive symptoms with recent or chronic stressful events, trait anxiety, and pessimistic attitudes. Depressive symptoms are independent of changes in menopausal status. Pessimism causes vulnerability to adverse situations and stressful events in midlife. Psychological interpretations for such effects are detailed.
