Strengthening FHA through private-sector partnerships
Article Abstract:
The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) may benefit from collaboration with private mortgage insurers who can provide advanced methods in risk management, underwriting, system technology and asset management. These capabilities, in combination with the FHA's identity as a government-backed institution, should help widen the scope of its efforts. In addition, the need for affordable housing can be addressed by involving community organizations that can provide the link between the egency and needy families.

Blow out the candles and get back to work
Article Abstract:
The Federal Housing Administration has failed to improve the housing conditions in low-income urban communities. Families applying for loans under the agency's mortgage program have been victimized by fraud and bureaucratic abuse and have consequently been unable to maintain payments for their homes. The homes have been defaulted to the agency, but they are also likely to cause housing values to falter among these neighborhoods and have contributed to the spread of urban blight.

The future of FHA
Article Abstract:
The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) has achieved significant progress in providing affordable housing through a home mortgage program. However, the agency still needs to improve on management aspects and it still has to adopt more reliable risk management tools. A series of forums has been initiated among sectors involved in housing and finance to generate suggestions on how the FHA can meet the demand for housing.
