Success of economic reform may have laid groundwork for a recovery in 1997
Article Abstract:
Yemen has paved the way for its economic recovery in 1997 with the success of its economic reform program, which stabilized the rial and drastically lowered inflation. The reform also resulted in higher hard currency reserves, balanced budget, and reduced balance-of-payments deficit. International financial institutions, bilateral donors and economists were also impressed with the program's swift yet comprehensive implementation. However, Yemen still has to implement structural adjustment measures such as a change in its tax structure, administrative reform and stabilization of its water resources and population.

Aden Free Zone; it's a project that should succeed, but investors will have to overcome weak economy and lack of coordination
Article Abstract:
The Yemeni government in Nov 1995 gave the Yemeni Company for Investment and Development (Yeminco) the contract to manage development of the the Aden Free Zone. Yeminco will be under the aegis of the Yemen Free Zone Public Authority. Aden was for nearly three millennia a key port in the Asia-Europe trade and if the country overcomes problems such as its weak infrastructure and lack of cooperation between government offices, Aden has the potential to resume its importance. Free zone development plans also include the growth of Aden's airport and of the tourist trade.

Reversing Aden port's decline
Article Abstract:
The port of Aden, Yemen is hoping to reverse a 10-year decline by implementing a free zone. Inefficiency and corruption are two of the reasons why ship traffic has increasingly been routed to Mukalla or Hodeidah. Critics of the free zone plan say that these issues need to be addressed first, and have accused government officials of stalling the free zone plan while they buy up property for resale to the Free Zone Authority. While the Aden free zone's immediate success is doubtful, its location may prove beneficial eventually.
