Thanks for the memories: baseball veterans' end-of-career salaries

Article Abstract:

Empirical evidence shows that the peak salaries of veteran players in Major League Baseball who are approaching the end of their careers depend on performance. An analysis of the experience of 123 position baseball players who were active in at least one of the years between 1986 and 1990 and played in at least 1,000 games with no less than 500 appearances at one position supports this conclusion. Another significant finding is that player performance is recognized and rewarded by general managers over the long haul in the form of higher salaries, which normally peak after a player has spent nine years in the league.

Quasi-Cournot behavior in a multimarket, multiplant setting

Article Abstract:

An examination of multimarket oligopoly which considers the price and production functions of single-product producers which could compete in other markets was presented. Among the other factors considered were plant-capacity constraints, selling options and quasi-Cournot elements. It was concluded that increased production among competitors currently producing underneath their capacity will result in decreased output for their markets while increased production in a state wherein competitors are producing at capacity will result in production increases in one and possibly all markets.
