The EU referendum in Finland on 16 October 1994: a vote for the West, not for Maastricht
Article Abstract:
Finland's European policy in the period between the Bolshevik Revolution and the collapse of the Soviet Union was conditioned by the need to maintain neutrality, which enabled it to keep special relations with the Soviet Union despite strong economic ties with Western Europe. On Oct. 16, 1995, a consultative referendum was held in which 53% of Finnish voters signalled their approval of membership in the EU. The referendum results reflect Finland's acknowledgment of its long-standing economic ties with Western European countries.

'Mad cows and Englishmen' - the institutional consequence of the BSE crisis
Article Abstract:
The effect of the BSE disease on the UK beef industry and its handling by the UK government had a major impact on the EU. The crisis demonstrated the power of the EC and proof that the body is not hostile to the UK. However, in the long term, the ramifications of how the BSE crisis was handled have set a precedent for future cooperation among EU member states in terms of other political and economic matters.

Bridging the capability-expectations gap: a case study of the CFSP joint action on South Africa
Article Abstract:
C. Hill's analysis of the effectiveness of the decisions made by the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU with regard to South Africa is generally correct although too stringent in its criticism of the gap between expectations and reality. In fact, the EU has been generally successful in attaining its objectives in dealing with the South African question.
