The 1996 Budget: is this the end of the tax-cutting road?
Article Abstract:
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Kenneth Clarke is expected to make a modest tax reduction in the 1996 Budget, emphasising scope for future tax cuts as public borrowing is reduced. Stronger consumer demand has been supported by improved export markets but inflation is not as encouraging and there is a continued high level of public borrowing. Therefore there is limited scope to fund tax cuts with spending reductions and a need to reduce borrowing to a sustainable level.
