Two cheers for CSWEP?
Article Abstract:
The American Economic Association's Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) has not sought radical change in the discipline itself. It has not publicized economics departments that have few or no women on the faculty, and has never proposed a quota for women economics professors. Instead, it has focused on helping women economists to become more technically able, and has also published a newsletter presenting the biographies of committee members. It is now time to consider whether the CSWEP should adopt a more radical approach.

The reasons for CSWEP
Article Abstract:
The American Economic Association's Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) must be assessed on the basis of the social context in which it was created. Even in 1971, it was still unusual for women to work, particularly in professions traditionally associated with men. The women who founded CSWEP were determined to give women a higher profile in economics. The structure of the American Economic Association, with a committee made up of both sexes and all faculty ranks, made it relatively easy to enact change.

A comment on CSWEP
Article Abstract:
The American Economic Association's Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) has played a significant role in enhancing the status of women economists. Indeed, it can be argued that the CSWEP has gone too far, and that male, rather than female, economists are now experiencing discrimination. It is vital that the profession exercises complete objectivity, rather than promoting the interests of one particular group above those of others.
