Two strategic paths to competitiveness
Article Abstract:
Local economic competitiveness can be achieved through efficient or flexible production. Under efficient production, firms use specialized capital goods and labor to produce price competitive products. Firms establish industrial complexes while labor markets are specialized. Under flexible production, firms use adaptable process technologies and broadly-trained labor. Firms agglomerate to gain competitive advantage while labor markets have multiple specializations.
