United Kingdom fiscal policy has been loosened and the surplus looks set to fall, while interest rates look set to rise. Pay settlements do not appear affected by drops in unemployment. Economic growt is unlikely to slow until 2001.

The United Kingdom looks set to achieve a budget surplus for 1998 to 1999, but a deficit for the following fiscal year. Interest rates are likely to be reduced in 1999, and inflation is likely to be less than target levels for this year. Consumer demand has been affected by fears over job security. The housing market is likely to see an easing of pressure in 1999. Business investment growth looks set to fall in 1999. Net trade is hampering economic growth. Meanwhile, companies have moved into financial deficit.
