Utility sponsored foreign economic development offices and consultants

Article Abstract:

Large utilities are starting to sponsor foreign investment promotion offices and consultants. A survey of 115 electric utilities revealed that 14 of them already have an economic development office or consultant overseas, with eight having such offices and consultants in Europe, four in the Pacific Rim and three in Canada. They are mostly funded by their respective electric utility, but some are co-sponsored by other utilities or government agencies. The main functions of these foreign economic development offices and consultants were found to be export promotion, investment promotion and existing industry visitation.
