What happened to Thailand?

Article Abstract:

The economic crisis which swamped Thailand in 1997 was the result of the collapse of its prolonged economic boom which preceded it. It was not brought about by speculators or by corrupt politicians. It was the result of mistakes in macroeconomic policy. These policy errors were mainly due to the maintenance of a fixed exchange rate when the conditions no longer permit it. The long economic boom also created a sense of euphoria which caused businessmen to be complacent to take risks which they would normally have not taken.
