Which way forward as Hong Kong goes back?
Article Abstract:
A smooth transition is expected as China takes control of Hong Kong in Jun 1997. Many predict that Hong Kong will remain an economic powerhouse in southeast Asia. China has promised to let Hong Kong pursue its policies toward free market, enterprise, and worldwide communication. However, the structure of the economy will change. Hong Kong's manufacturing will be transferred to China, but design and high-tech operations will remain in Hong Kong.

Industries tipped to lead
Article Abstract:
Many of Hong Kong's manufacturing industries will be transferred to China. Among them will be textiles and clothing, which account for 2,500 factories and workshops with many more being created in China. Furthermore, Japanese and US investments in the areas of electronic manufacturing, peripherals, and supplies will continue to grow, which is one reason China has emphasized a smooth transition.

Fair winds
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's handover to China will not affect its trade fair industry. Since the 1980s, Hong Kong has emerged as one of the world's best countries for exhibitions and trade shows. Hong Kong's local organizers are planning shows such as Interyarn and Linkin for 1997 and 1998. There will also be shows for construction projects, which will concentrate on equipment, materials, and services.
