Why can Mauritius export manufactures and Ghana not?
Article Abstract:
A study of the poor performance of Ghanaian exports compared to that of Mauritius revealed that Mauritian firms are four times more efficient that their Ghanaian counterparts. The available data also suggest a strong correlation between firm size and employee compensation. A comparison of companies with over 100 workers, which are also the firms that are more likely to export, indicates that wages are only three times higher in Mauritius compared to Ghana while efficiency remains four times as high.
