Wilhelm Roscher and English Christian social thought: from Frederick Maurice to Margaret Thatcher

Article Abstract:

The development of Christian socialism in the UK was brought about by an Anglican movement to apply Christian ethics to solve the problem of poverty from the mid-nineteenth century until modern times. Heavily influenced by Unitarian humanism, it was shaped by social Christians such as Frederick Maurice, Arnold Toynbee, William Beveridge and Margaret Thatcher. With a Lutheran background in Germany, Wilhelm Roscher likewise developed similar ideas about solving the poverty issue and the welfare state.

Wilhelm Roscher in the German Democratic Republic: on the history of the reception of a German national economist

Article Abstract:

Wilhelm Roscher's stature as a major contributor to economic thought was largely unnoticed in East Germany. Nevertheless, economists in the German Democratic Republic 'occupied themselves' with his teachings. According to a review of economic literature in the country, Wilhelm Roscher was associated with the historical school of economics, the historical method, opposition to socialism, anti-revolutionary views, rejection of classical economics and the abandonment of political economy theory.
