Will Labour's economic programme work?

Article Abstract:

A Labour government will be inheriting a more favourable economic situation if it is elected, than the last two incoming governments. However it will have to deal with the high level of unemployment which has persisted since the 1980s, which in turn increases benefit payments. The new government will also have to cope with the troubled economic links it has with Europe. A major theme of Labour economic policy has been unemployment reduction, and a package of employment measures would be introduced in a new Budget. Whether these will be successful will depend on whether the package is accompanied by good macroeconomic management. The main features of the first Budget would be the utility windfall tax and the reduction of VAT on domestic fuel.

The myths and realities of structural change in the UK labour market

Article Abstract:

The assumption that the structural changes in employment in the UK are causing imbalances in the labour market and higher rates of structural unemployment is questioned. The bases for such views are examined in relation to the shift from manufacturing to services and from blue-collar to white-collar employment and the decline in lifetime employment. The implications of structural change in employment on the labour market is further examined.
