Zimbabwean trade liberalisation: ex post evaluation
Article Abstract:
Trade liberalization in Zimbabwe occurred at the same time as a drought, and it is necessary to separate the impact of the drought from the impact of liberalization. Employment and output contracted following liberalization, while consumption and imports rose, as did the balance of trade deficit. The drop in output was linked to deindustrialization, and this could continue due to uncertainty linked to liberalization. The ability of industries to adjust to changes in conditions will affect the development of the Zimbawean economy.

Gender, wages and discrimination in the USSR: A study of a Russian industrial town
Article Abstract:
Men's and women's wages in the USSR were analyzed using data from a 1989 survey of Soviet households in the city of Taganrog. The gender wage gap found was similar in size to those reported for various OECD countries, but smaller than those for Japan, the UK, or US, and larger than others, especially Scandinavian countries. It was smaller for hourly than for monthly wages, with women working fewer hours and earning less, which is not unique to the USSR.
