A fundamental fallacy: characterising relations between the Middle East and the West as a clash of civilisations plays into the hands of fundamentalists, argues Thomas Meyer

Article Abstract:

The clash of civilisations theory has resurfaced recently as a viable explanation of world events, especially after the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US. The clash of civilisations theory acknowledges and gives credence to fundamentalism, even though an entire civilisation cannot be reduced to one overarching cultural value. Fundamentalism exists in every culture, and by advancing the clash of civilisations theory, its proponents partake in the idealism they seek to denounce.

Article Abstract:

Spending on universities in England is much smaller than the equivalent spent in Germany, France, and the United States. The proposed graduate tax, in which a graduate pays over a long period of time for the advantages awarded them from graduating from a university, raises more questions than it answers, including who would pay, how much would they pay, would everyone pay the same and is it fair?
