Allan Bloom opens Mrs Thatcher's mind

Article Abstract:

Former Higher Education Minister of the Conservative administration George Walden believes his education policy was correct, despite criticism from the universities. Walden pursued a policy that sought to increase the emphasis on teaching, increase student numbers in polytechnics, establish science parks and focus some studies on centres of excellence. Walden was highly impressed by the wit and wisdom of academic Allan Bloom, author of 'The Closing of the American Mind,' whom he met when visiting the US. Walden invited Bloom to meet then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who asked intelligent questions about his book.

Article Abstract:

A former Conservative minister for higher education in the UK suggests education in private day schools should be more widely available. He also calls for better pay for teachers to encourage highly qualified applicants. He is critical of those who wish to keep the education system the same. But is supportive of ideas to make the top universities more accessible for children from state schools. He is worried about the quality of education for those who do not get a place. He expresses his concern modern children have fewer chances of attaining higher education than when he was young.
