BA criticised over handling of UKPd2m award

Article Abstract:

The British Academy, the UK's academy for the humanities and social sciences, has been criticised by the National Audit Office, a Parliamentary watchdog, over "weaknesses and inconsistencies" in the way in which it handled a UKPd2 million centenary research competition following an investigation by The Times Higher Education Supplement. While the report found no bias in the competition, it did identify two flaws in the grant-giving procedures.

LJMU broke guidelines with 'beyond modest' gifts

Article Abstract:

Liverpool John Moores University has completed a major reform of procedures and policies for receiving gifts and hospitality after discovering widespread control weaknesses during a review ordered by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce). Hefce was alerted that senior finance staff at the university had accepted gifts from travel agents, legal advisers and accountancy firms which were 'beyond modest hospitality'.

LJMU dropout rate criticised

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the increasing rate of students abandoning their academic commitments ar Liverpool John Moores University, England, are discussed. Particular attention is given to the findings of the quality assurance inspectors, including the academic failure and financial hardship.
