Article Abstract:

An analysis of the contents of Universities UK's Longer-Term Strategy Group's fifth annual "Patterns of Higher Education Institutions in the UK" report. A number of points are identified as being of concern to policy-makers, including the fact that students do not always make the choices that their elders think they should, that international recruitment is important and that greater funding and more coherent higher education policies are needed.

Article Abstract:

The vice-chancellor of Swansea University details the difficulties involved in restructuring the university's operations and the way in which it was run. It is acknowledged that the changes, which were radical, were not entirely benign and involved some controversy and difficulties, but it is argued that the result of the changes has been a significant improvement in the university's situation.
