Bohemian rhapsody, Oxford style

Article Abstract:

A discussion of the efforts made by Oxford City Opera, an opera society run by students at Oxford University, to launch their first show, a performance of Puccini's La Boheme. The founders of Oxford City Opera, Eamonn Kelly and Tagbo Ilozue, believe that Oxford's previous opera society, the Oxford University Opera Club which was founded in the 1920s and folded in 1995, was unable to adapt to the times and wound up performing obscure works that few people wanted to see, a pitfall that they do not intend to fall into as they aim to ensure that Oxford students always have the opportunity to experience opera.

Strange lack of old peculiars

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the decline of the eccentric in British academia are examined. It is argued that the eccentric is a great academic institution and that while a degree of eccentricity is still around, workload demands combined with the requirements of the research assessment exercise and a desire to acquiesce with student opinion mean that the level of eccentricity in modern universities is not what it once was.
