Article Abstract:
Some observers feel that national systems of accreditation and quality systems are too narrow, and that the EC should be considering a system for the whole community. One proposal is that different agencies be established, to vet subjects, research or even an employer-led organisation. This would also prevent the links between quality and government grants being used, as they will be in the UK. EC ministers are due to consider such proposals in Jun 1993.

Hungary sets out on the Europe road
Article Abstract:
Hungary is embarking on radical reforms of its higher education. They want to increase student numbers and produce more business trainees and social workers at the expense of training teachers and engineers. Some of the present higher education institutions would be merged into larger organisations, and tuition fees would be paid by students. Colleges will have autonomy over curricula and research. Hungary has asked for EC grants to fund these changes.

Lifting the lid on Britain's secrets; historians are drawing up a list of documents they would like released
Article Abstract:
Access to government papers is usually available after 30 years unless the documents are particularly sensitive. A White Paper is proposed to allow easier access to documents of historical interest. Many people would like to see more freedom of information enshrined in a government Act.
