Brother Cain sister Jane

Article Abstract:

Academic and Psychoanalyst Juliet Mitchell has been studying the role of siblings in psychotic conditions, such as hysteria. She points out the importance of sibling rivalry had often been ignored in the past. Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud failed to consider sibling rivalry in his case studies. The birth of a new sibling can lead to changes in eating patterns and may eventually lead to anorexia. Mitchell explains how the birth of a sibling may cause a child to feel very jealous whilst a younger child may feel very envious of an older child's position in the family.
