Brown's starter for 20 million pounds sterling

Article Abstract:

University costs could rise by as much as 100 million pounds sterling under changes to National Insurance contributions proposed in UK Chancellor Gordon Brown's Mar 1998 Budget. The Budget set aside 250 million pounds sterling for education, with 100 million pounds sterling of this to be used for training in high technology and computers. University research will benefit from a 50 million pounds sterling venture capital fund, while a 7 million pounds sterling fund was announced for enhancing education at, and access to, regional and national museums.

How Blair can remedy the right state we're in

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour Government must analyse the economic condition of the country and identify the origins of those conditions to disassociate itself from the failings and responsibilities of the previous Conservative government. Labour could identify an economic strategy by reconsidering the growth strategies presented in Labour's Industry Forum's industrial policy manifesto of 1994. Proposals include the superiority of industrial modernisation over fiscal austerity and an active regional policy.

Slow on the uptake

Article Abstract:

UK economic policy after 1945 was affected by foreign exchange and balance of trade problems. The 1960 Labor government inherited a large deficit and faced pressure to devalue. Tax cuts after 1979 coupled with a delay in joining the European exchange rate mechanism led to a misallocation of resources. Reluctance to be committed to European unity meant that the UK has lacked a leadership role in Europe. The UK appears to be slow in recognising major global changes and adapting to them.
