Building a portal for the people

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom Public Library Network Adviser Chris Batt has been given the role of overseeing the installation of the electronic network into over 4,000 libraries. Some 50 million pounds has been granted to the project. Batt points out through the People's Network the community will be able to have access to information and resources but he does not see it as threatening the education system. He foresees the greater links between university and public libraries. The initial phase of setting up the network is expected to be completed by 2002.

Cinderellas arrive late at the ball

Article Abstract:

Archive collections must continue to be funded to ensure their conservation for the future. Information of the collections, from all periods in history, are often being made available through the World Wide Web. Archive collections in university libraries were not well funded or utilized but better access to the collections, through electronic communication equipment, has led to increasing interest and funds. Funding should be awarded to worthwhile projects, over a period of time, rather than given all at once.
