Bullies in the common room

Article Abstract:

Research by Hedwig Petrie of Middlesex University has revealed widespread and sophisticated bullying in British higher education. Support for strong anecdotal evidence of bullying was provided when more than 1/4 of 70 questionnaire respondents reported having been bullied. Principal lecturer Vicky Merchant recalls being 'overwhelmed' with complaints from victims of bullying during her six years as harassment officer at Central Lancashire University. Merchant points out that bullying is rewarded as a management style in universities whereas structures should be set up to prevent it.

Axe threat outrages Notts staff

Article Abstract:

The University of Nottingham, England, has threatened senior teachers with compulsory redundancy because of poor research performance, unless 50 volunteers step forward for severance or retirement by Sep 1997. Some targeted teachers claim the university has refused to approve their research proposals without revealing how the proposals are judged, and they may seek legal action for defamation of character. Some long-serving teachers who might have considered taking voluntary retirement are angered that they will subsequently be wrongly perceived as under-performers.

Showdown over FE jobs

Article Abstract:

Rotherham College of Arts and Technology in the United Kingdom is to make 90 compulsory redundancies, following the failure of a plan to rescue the college from financial debt. In addition to the 20% cuts in Government spending in the Nov. 1995 budget, the college's finances have been generally mismanaged over the past two years. Members of NATFHE have been called upon to protest against the redundancies. Classes are being combined to cater for the lack of lecturers.
